Welcome to Tombée Du Camion! This incredible shop is located in France, but lucky for us they have a very cool website with lots of fun eye candy! I am absolutely swooning at the site of all the bins in this photo! I wish I could "Bewitched" blink myself into that room!

Look how incredible these vignettes are! From what I can tell the store is chock-a-block full of amazing vintage ephemera, doll pieces, and other rare and fabulous objets d'arte!

These images are just set ups so that they can show their inventory off online, but I happen to think that these images would make lovely prints! Or cards! Something! I just love the design and feel! I am so excited that Deb Barnett, of Glass Action Studio, has finally opened up her Etsy shop! I have been wanting to share her awesome work for months, and now that she has an online home, I can!!!

These vases are just amazing! When hung from a window, the colors of each vase are insane! I keep 2 in my kitchen window for herb cuttings from the garden! Then I dont have to waste anything, the herbs stay fresh in water, and a lot of the times if it is a wonderfully smelling herb, like Rosemary, the whole kitchen will has the scent!

They come in all kinds of colors, shapes and sizes and are super affordable for such a beautiful handmade piece! These would be a great Mothers Day Gift!

The Art of Wooing

The Art Of Wooing, a new book described by author Kaz Brecher as a mixed media art and poetry book with a story told through email exchange”, is totally original and exciting! Kaz has created this beautifully illustrated book all about (you guessed it) the art of wooing, and everything that that entails. An autobiography of sorts, the artwork and poems illustrate the ups and downs of an 18 month long relationship Kaz had with her kickboxing instructor.

Many people use artistic expression and journaling as an outlet to help keep themselves focused and anchored. This book a fabulous example of just how effective a practice it can be! The book is self-published and available exclusively through the website.

This Thursday evening, 2/28, there will be a book release party in Los Angeles at Fresh Pressed. Come meet Kaz and pick up a copy of the book for yourself!

I will totally admit to being knitting obsessed lately. I cant stop myself! I dream of yarn and of all the cute new things I am going to weave out of my ever growing stash! I have just discovered an amazing artist named Rachel Denny! Each of her pieces is organic and natural. On her site she talks about being "seduced by materials and the process of making an object out of an idea." Wise words that I completely agree with! It is the adrenaline rush that comes from having a vision and seeing it through to fruition that makes being an artist so extraordinary! Her statements on humanity and our social regard for nature are heartfelt and emotional.

I would love to have a huge wall covered in these Wallflowers! Each one is life size and cast with the hardware in it, so it just screws directly into the wall! They are unexpected and divine! I am so glad to have encountered her work!! I hope you will click over to her website and see more of it!

Book review: The Kennedys By Richard Avedon

I was recently sent a copy of the newest Kennedy Book to have hit the market called The Kennedys, Portrait of a Family which is a gorgeous collection of photos taken in the early 1960s by Richard Avedon. This shoot took place a few months before Kennedy was inaugurated into the White House, for an article in Harper's Bazaar. Upon opening the pages for the first time I was immediately overwhelmed by how intimate the images are. This is a very young family with an incredible legacy, and having the knowledge of the fates of all involved, it is emotionally gripping to see baby John in his fathers arms, and little Caroline holding newborn brother! Forget how stunning Jackie was. Your jaw will drop!

I have never seen images of the Kennedys that are so absolutely soulful. Avedon really captured a tenderness that I think all families can related to. In the end, put aside all of the grandeur and mystery that surrounds the surname, this is a family that at the core is like any of us. They loved each other, and it is evident in these pages.

Also, it doesn't hurt that I am a portrait freak and flipping through the pages makes my mind reel with possibilities! Oh how I would love to blow up one of these images huge and do a piece! Wow, I am actually drooling at the thought!

If you or anyone you know is like me, you have to check out this book. Really, it is quite the eye candy!

Felt Club + Maker Fair= Bliss!!!!

Have you heard the most amazing news to hit the LA craft scene in a long, long time??? The fabulousness that is Felt Club is teaming up with Craft and Make magazines to have a mini Maker Faire, called the Maker Square, at the XL Holiday event on November 18th!! I know it is early, an I am sure there will be lots of info to come, I am just too excited not to share!

At the summer event it was clear that the Felt Club has become so hugely popular with shoppers that no walls can contain it! Therefore, it is moving to the awesome quad on the campus of Los Angeles City College (855 N Vermont Ave., LA CA 90029). There will be 70+ vendors in 10x10 booths (more room = more shopping goodness!!), food, music, prizes, and the brand new Maker Square. It will be a long, fun filled day. You had better get some rest now, because if the last few FC'c are any indication, you will want to be there bright and early!!

Also, if you are planning on checking out the LA County Fair, be sure to plan ahead to sync up with one of the awesome Felt Club classes being held there throughout the weeks of the show. You can see the full schedule here.

Barnsdall Art Market

This past weekend I got to check out the Barnsdall Art Market. I happy to report that it was a lovely show! There were many artists whose work I had never seen before and a few that I really love. The location was awesome and really very cool. Each vendor was placed in their own slot, bordered on either side by trees, creating a very boutiquey kind of feel. While I liked this aspect, I wish there had been a center row of tents to help create more interaction and activity. The shows I enjoy the most are the ones where there is a lot of bustling activity and interaction with my fellow shoppers/vendors. Not sure f a center aisle would be possible, but something I hope the event planners would consider for future events.

The genre of artisans at the event was quite varied. Here are a few of my favorite discoveries from the day:

This is Emilyn Eto. Her screen prints are simply divine!

I had never seen brokesy Attack Pillows before! I loved them all! Cant wait to have a baby to buy for! These would be so cute in a childs room!

Tyler Bender is busy taking the craft world by storm! I have been running into him all over the web lately! This was the first time I got to check out his journals in person, and they are really cool. They are perfect gifts for all occasions!

Denise Young had a bunch of new pillows to share! They are divine! I love her combination of textures and pattern. They are so sophisticated and lovely!

Scott Milleris a mixed media artist who creates GORGEOUS mixed media paintings! The photo does not do them justice. They are so very beautiful in person!

The lovely ladies from Crown-E has very pretty jewelry to share, but I was particularly taken with this awesome handbag that opened perfectly wide if you criss-crossed the handles. Never lose your cell phone to the deep dark abyss that is the bottom of your purse again! Genius!

I know this was the first of several shows to come and I really hope that it evolves into a regular bustling event. Future dates for the Art Market are October 21st, and December 16th.

I had originally been scrolling through decor8, and the patterns leapt off the screen at me. A great place to find crafty classes is at your local craft fair! I just got word about an awesome class being held at the Felt Club XL Summer Event taking place on July 15th. Laura Stokes of Charcoal Designs will be teaching Charm Jewelry 101. This is just the first of many classes to be announced. Anna Torado is a painter living in Portland, OR. Her Etsy shop is jam packed with vibrant pieces of art, both originals and Giclee prints, that will make your heart sing!!

Her inspiring palettes make all of the organic shapes undulate and float across the canvas as if part of a symphony. Each one has its own personality and mood. The imagery feels almost like looking through a microscope at another world. I am truly loving these!!

Crafty Classes for the Masses (So. California)

If you are crafty then you know how much fun, and how cathartic, it can be to take the occasional class at your local craft shop. This can be a great way to meet fellow crafters and learn new techniques, or just brush up on the ones in your arsenal! I was sent an email by an aspiring artist in Los Angeles asking me about local places to take classes and so I thought I would do a little searching and let you guys know what I could find. All the listings have the zip codes in parenthesis in case you want to map them out!

OH, I am sure that everyone out there has a favorite place to take a class. If you would like to share with the rest of us (please!!!!) leave a comment or send me an email and I will add to this list! Doesn't have to be strictly CA. Anywhere in the US would be awesome!!

The Pink Porch is a small yarn shop in the very quaint Tujunga Village area of the Valley. Anne, the teacher there, is a yarn genius! She will be teaching many upcoming classes and believe me, they are worth it! Here is the list: Tuesdays - open/sweater workshop 7:30 to 9:30 ($20 per week or 3 sessions for $50), Thursday - beginner (as in never touched needles) workshop 7 to 9 ($20 per week or 3 sessions for $50). Semi private lessons can be scheduled on tues, thurs, or fri between 2 to 7 ($60 for 3 one and half hour sessions). Most Friday nights the place is open late and we all sit around with beer and pizza and knit ourselves silly. At the Stampers Warehouse in Danville you can take a class on painting silk scarves or scrapbooking. There is even one called "Pez Totems" which I think would be a blast! (94526)

Kit Kraft has been a fixture in the San Fernando Valley since 1954. They offer a Precious Metal Clay class. (91604)

They actually carry my work at Creative Courage so I have personally gotten to craft there and the classes are awesome! I took a Tin Fairy House class that was just completely fun and interesting. The teacher ROCKED and the other students were so fun to meet and talk to! (91364)

The ARTbar is the kind of place I don't think I would ever want to leave! Located in the Santa Ana Artists Village, they believe "everyone is an artist". This mixed media art studio has a rockin' events calendar. (92701)

I have been hearing about Zinnia for months and have been dying to go check it out! They offer sock creature classes, and mini quilts. You can even take in an old pair of jeans and join a class that is all about painting them and making them new again! This is definitely on my must-check-out list! (91030)

There is an awesome yarn shop in Santa Monica called Wildfiber. They have a great list of beginning and intermediate classes. (90404)

The Baker's Edge Brownie Pan is the best thing I have ever seen! Who doesn't love the contrast of the crispy edge of the brownies with the soft gooey center? I for one always steal and hide the corners! ;) You know you do too!

I love the idea of these Easy Needlepoint Kits from Miss Wooly! As someone who has wanted to try out needle pointing, I think these are a great way to do a fun project and learn how it is all done! I love that caterpillar!

Etsy Labs

If you are an East Coast crafter, or just someone who wants to cultivate your crafty side, are you in for a treat!! The Etsy Labs are now open for everyone and anyone who wants to explore the craft world.

The genius guys and gals over at Etsy have put together a place to learn and share your talents. The facilities are available to all members of Etsy.com and Patron of the Labs (PAL). To become a member of PAL all you need to do is show up during Lab hours (11am to 6pm every day) and pay your dues. Right now, February is totally free! In exchange for using the space the guys are asking that you show up with a "donation, a smile and an eagerness to help".

Starting in March there will be a basic $20/month membership fee and superlow $5 hourly fee for use of equipment. Membership includes unlimited wi-fi, heat, good conversation and a clean toilet. The monthly fee is applicable towards your first two hours of equipment use.

This is a great opportunity for those of us who work out of our homes to get out of the house, creatively interact with many, many talented people and gain help and inspiration from each other! I really wish that I was less that 3000 miles away! I'd be there in a heartbeat!

Queenthings Interview

Jenny Vorwaller is an amazing jewelry designer and the brains behind Queenthings. Her website showcases her stunning pieces as well as shares her photos and adventures in her new home in South America. In this interview of sorts she tells us all about her new line of jewelry! Chapter One was recently released only to find HUGE success! Jenny was kind enough to answer some questions about her ideas, inspirations, and vision for her new lines!!

Your photos are all so beautiful, and the flow of your first Chapter in the collection is sublime! Please tell us more about telling stories.

With my own personal jewelry collection, I found that each piece I owned told a story; from travels, gifts that I had received from special people in my life, heirlooms, and so on. I wanted my work to have the same meaning and I also wanted to create some room for me to grow as a designer. So the whole idea for creating chapters and stories for my collections came to me as a way to help me focus. Though I've seen artists create wonders being fed with just one source, I felt too confined to limit myself with one genre. Being an avid reader, somehow the idea of each collection that I put out being a story made sense. It has a beginning (the concept) a middle (the creating) and a happy ending (others enjoying what I put out there.) With painting, most ideas seem to communicate more strongly when worked as a series, and I see "stories" being told in fashion all the time, why not in jewelry?

You recently made a huge move to South America. Can you tell us a little bit more about your new surroundings?

I step out of my home here and into a new world. Everyday I am in awe at this beautiful world, the places yet undiscovered, how people live and their way of life. Travel truly transforms. Picture old ornate architecture, lively fruit and vegetable stands, panaderias (tasty bakeries), antique cars, miles and miles of beautiful beaches, a rich political past that is deeply sad at times, wonderful artisan feiras, the most tranquil people on earth, the breeze cooling the summer from the rio de la plata...

Are you a full time artist, or do you have a day job? If so, how does one effect the other?

I am a full time artist, though I don't work full hour days at the moment. When I am not working directly at my studio desk, I am usually out exploring and immersing myself in other creative activities and recharging. I'm so grateful to be doing what I love, after having worked uninspiring jobs, I can't take this for granted!

Are there other artists, musicians, actors (creatives in general) that are really influencing you right now?

Oh! There are so many, too many to list! Also, I kind of like to keep my influences for the next collection to myself until it is launched, it just seems more exciting to me that way.

What's next?

Well, I don't have a very scheduled timetable for putting out each collection, I think they will come as I can fit them between current travels. This allows me to carve out time to really go inside myself and see what I feel like exploring. I love researching, and I feel the next set of jewelry will be a total departure from the first secret garden pieces. I'm sensing something more modern. Contemporary studio jewelry is fascinating to me, with the way it crosses boundaries. Maybe I'm leaning more to this style because I just returned from viewing Calatrava's beautiful bridge here in Buenos Aires. Architecture has always always inspired me immensely, ever since my art history class in college, I've been enchanted. So I would love to incorporate that into jewelry. Right now i have a special collaboration piece that is completely inspired by one of my favorite gothic cathedrals. I'm really excited to see it progress, and I'm working with an amazing designer.

What about the photos on your site? Are there prints for sale?

The photos I created on my site were there to support my idea, to have both worlds collide. I hadn't even thought of making them available for purchase! But I'm so glad that you ask, because when i finally decided to *gulp* buckle down and choose a medium to express myself in (I'm what you would call a multidisciplinary artist you see) I had a lot of fear that I wouldn't be able to ignore photography, painting, everything else! But I realized that they all work together, beautifully. So there may be some original artwork with the next jewelry story...stay tuned.

Kim Family Benefit

Holiday Buying Ideas-1

I think that this has been a most amazing year for the online craft community! We all discovered Etsy, which led to the discovery of some of the most talented people I know! I plan on featuring a bunch of them throughout the holiday season to encourage everyone to buy handmade this year. There is nothing quite as special as one of a kind art, jewels, clothes, accessories, etc. These are very talented people, and this is our opportunity to really support them!!!

Purl Soho

All of the web searching I did for the post about the SuperNatural scarf and hat drive reminded me about a fabulous knitting shop! I would like to share Purl Soho with you. This is a shop that I made it a point to visit on my last trip to NYC. I was super excited to see Purl featured on decor8 in August, announcing that they had launched an online store! The Brick and Morter shop in the West Village is entrancing! I was there for hours while my husband roamed the neighborhood. Luckily he was a good sport! In addition to tons of jaw-dropping yarns, they offer knitting patterns, accessories, notions, and magazines. I dare you to resist! Make that a triple dog dare!

Knit with love!

For the last 4 years SuperNaturale has taken scarf & hat donations for their annual drive that benefits Sanctuary For Families, an organization that provides many services for battered women and their children. (To learn more about the drive, click here.) To help you get started, here are some great resources, places that in my current learning phase of knitting (beginner!) I look to for inspiration.

Jen Stafford, The domiKNITrix, has a naughty approach to her knitting! Her patterns are fun and fresh! Check out this Devil Hat, just in time for Halloween! There is also a modified version, the Snow Devil, with long straps for the cheeky snowboarder in us all! If, like me, you aren't a seasoned knitter, then check out the 6 free easy scarf patterns that are great for learning simple techniques while knitting something for a good cause!

Yarn-A-Go-Go has a great description of taking patterns you like, and combining them. I love this idea because it allows you to be creative and design your own look without having to know how to do the figuring of an all new pattern!

Of course Knitty is always a fantabulous resource for fun, free patterns. I am always ooohhhing and aaahhhing over the images, and then I realize that my day job would never alow for me to make all of the fabulous knitted things that I am tempted to embark on! I must remember, one at a time!!!

In addition to the temptation of amazing patterns, amazing yarn is also a trigger for me. I covet yarn! It is so soft and cuddly, who wouldn't want it all to themselves!!! There are tons of places to find new, cool combinations. Here are some I enjoy!

Luxe Fibre is a great resource for hand spun and hand dyed yarns. Natasha Fialkov is passionate about spinning very colorful and luxurious combinations of yarns which she also knits into fantastic items she sells in her Etsy shop.

Fearless Fibers has tons of colorful sock weight yarns! Every skein is hand dyed or hand painted. Your dilemma will be how to resist every luscious color!

JuJu Knits offers affordable Merino Wools that are each dyed in a rainbow of hues. Each skein is 440 yards, plenty to knit any 1 skein project!

R. Chunn

I really admire painters who use oils as their medium. I wish I had the ability to be so realistic when rendering a jar, or an apple. R. Chunn has a way of making his quick draw paintings gorgeous. He paints each one in a single sitting. His collection of fun tins, bottles, jars and objet d'art make for great studies in his pieces! My favorite part of the paintings is the use of familiar objects, without all of the typography and labeling. Who doesn't know that the bottle in the top piece, the one on the left, is some kind of flavoring, like vanilla. And that the jar on the far right below . . . Grey Poupon!

Artist, Emerging

I am a certified bag nut! I love them, and covet them, but I rarely ever use them! I love bright patterns, fresh designs, good construction and lots of pockets! Here are a few bag options that will ensure the bag doesn't end up on a hook on the back of the door!

Alicia Paulson Studio

I know that most of the crafty/design blog community is very familiar with Alicia Paulson and her blog, Posie Gets Cozy, but for some reason I have not caught on. I must have been in a coma! What a treausre trove of wonderful anecdotes, imagery and cooking pictures that will make your mouth water!

Alicia also has an online boutique called Rosy Little Things where she sells a wide variety of sweet handmade goods all created in her home studio, which brings me to my point! Is this NOT the most gorgeous studio you have every seen!!!?

I am so in awe of how perfectly lovely the environment is! So soothing and calm. I would never think to use such a bold color in my studio space, but this has changed my perspective! I think that the creative touches, like having the slippers on the wall for extra storage, really help to inspire. All of the beautiful papers, notions, bobbins and fabrics are such eye candy. It sure makes for a beautiful space! Well done!

I wanted to share the discovery of this space with you becasue I think that having an environment to work in that stimulates your creative juices is so important. Sometimes it is hard with all of the stuff we collect to create with, but Alicia proves that it can be done BEAUTIFULLY! (I am so jealous!)

Daniel Bejar

I just discovered an amazing Illustrator by the name of Daniel Bejar. His work is all very thought provoking and well executed. There aren't many designers who can make such important statements in such innovative and smart ways. The works are just all beautiful! The piece above, Identity Theft was awarded the silver medal from the Society of Publication Designers in June 2006. Well deserved nod if you ask me!

"The Summer of '04"
I really like seeing the fingerprints and smudges along the outside edges of each piece. It reminds me of how Rodin's fingerprints and nail marks can be seen in his sculptures because he liked to mold with his hands. There is something humanzing and beautiful about works that are created by artists who like to get dirty and use their hands as tools, instead of to hold tools, while they are creating.

Felt Club, Sat. July 8th

Felt Club is this weekend!!! For anyone who isn't in LA, or has been in a cave for the last few months, Felt Club is a mini craft fair held on the second Saturday of every month in the parking lot behind Meltdown Comics. There are just about 2 dozen crafters and every one of them had the coolest wares! I snapped a few photos of a handful of the vendors from last months event. Click on the links to their shops to check 'em out, and if you are in the area be sure to make it out tomorrow. Some of the vendors will be the same, and there will be a few new faces too!! I cant wait!

Salim Nourallah

I recently discovered a very talented musician living in Texas named Salim Nourallah. His sound is along the Beatles line, and I am addicted! Salim was recently awarded Song of the Year, Best Producer, and Best Album in the 2006 Dallas Observer Music Awards. I have had A Way To Your Heart on repeat for a few weeks now. He has a new alum, Pleasentry Lane, coming soon and will be touring in Germany in September. Check out his very cooll website for lots of photos, lyrics and news!
